OK---I know the Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHZ chip is the big Kahunna ---fastest chip
on the market at present---but the price is still too high? What is the
next fastest intel chip that doesn't break the bank completely??????
Thanx.

The E6700 @2.66GHz is about half the price of the 6800. The 6600 @2.4GHz
is about $200 less that the 6700. I'm planning on getting a 6700 in the
next couple of months, my metric is to look at the price performance of
the total system. A 6700 is about 11% faster than a 6600 and a 6700 system
in the configuration that I want it, 4G DDR2 800, 2 drives, cheap
graphics, no OS, is about 2K vs 1.8K so 10% more for 10% more performance
is justifiable.

The next step down is the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 which runs at 2.66 GHz.
Selling for around $570 in the U.S.

* Chingy:

[XEON DC 5160]

Server cpu...

Nope. Real "server cpus" are the XEON MPs (Multi Processor), the XEON
5160 is DP (Dual Processor) only and not only aimed at small servers but
also at desktop workstations...
