Default A bad sector checker program in Macs?

Hello.

Does anyone know of a free program that can check for bad sectors in
Macs (e.g., MacBook Pro from early 2008 [4,1]) without losing datas? I
don't care if it runs in or outside of Mac OS X (currently
v10.5.8/Leopard installed). Booting from USB/discs is fine too. I was
hoping Mac OS X came with badsect command since it is based on FreeBSD
as shown in http://www.manpages.info/macosx/badsect.8.html, but it
doesn't unless I missed something. Also, Disk Utility doesn't do it.

Thank you in advance.

none that can do so reliably, on any platform.

based on you other posts, that drive has issues. toss it and install an
ssd. it'll breathe a little life in that aging macbook.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Why are you so reluctant to do the right thing here? You know the drive is
about to fail, yet you seem to be willing to do anything BUT replace it -
even though it's the simplest and least risky thing you can do. Very
strange!

Yeah.

You should replace it before it completely fails, and you can't recover
anything from it.

If you have bad sectors the data is already lost.

I don't care if it runs in or outside of Mac OS X (currently

What do you think you are trying to do?

(The best thing is to backup as much data as you can and reformat the
drive. If that fails, punch a nail through it and throw it in the
recycler.

Back it up now before the disk failure cascades. As the disk fails, materials are thrown onto the platters. Back it up now ! Soon
the platters will be covered with detritus and nothing will work on it.
