I think you're referring to SLC, MLC, and TLC NAND chips, which make up the storage part of an SSD. SLC has a single bit per cell, making it the fastest and most long-lived type of NAND, but its relative low density makes it the most expensive and drives that use it tend to have smaller storage capacity. MLC doubles the number of bits per cell to two. TLC increases the number of bits per cell to three. MLC and TLC allow higher bit densities and thus higher storage capacities at a lower price, but they tend to have lower performance and shorter life. SLC is typically used in Enterprise drives, while MLC and TLC are more typically used in Consumer drives. Google "SLC MLC TLC" for lots of articles that go into much greater detail. |
