Default WD hard drives

I seem to be having a large amount of WD drives failing.

What is your drive brand name of choice?

Not had a problem with WD. They've a 3 year guarantee so send them back
to them.

Failing HOW?

I haven't had a WD die on me in over 10 years.

Poor cooling? Weak power supply? Bad RAM?

Have you run WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows or their
self-booting Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)?

At least run a lookie-see on the SMART diagnostics on the drive

Other than "obvious bad" (as in banging heads,no spin, etc), I've seen
more "bad drives" that were just fine; it was data corruption caused by
bad RAM/poor cables/hosed OS that made folks think their drive was
fubar'ed.

Do you have a large amount of WD drives, or are your WD drives on
avera older than your other drives? Because I can't find reliable
information that says any brands or current models have been less
reliable than average, except for the Seagate 7200.11, which suffered
from badly designed firmware that's since been fixed.

I buy whatever is on sale and is brand new. I avoid "recertified"
drives because warranties are often short (90-365 days), and Seagate
and WD said they reset the SMART data that indicates how many hours
the HD had been run and how many bad sectors cropped up in use. Also
if the drive is for an old computer that has trouble recognizing 300GB/
s SATA drives, I get a Seagate or WD because their drives can be
slowed to 150GB/s max. using a jumper, rather than needing a program
to do this, as do Samsung and Hitachi.

I like Seagate, but WD is not bad.

Maxtor now Seagate and WD.

My pre Seagate Maxtor's are over 10 years old...well over.

Had a Fuji fail in my laptop at 2 1/2 years.

Just about all my White Label drives have failed. I also had a WD fail
with 500 gig of good stuff on it. I like Hitachi and Samsung now.

I think its just six of one and half a dozen of the other. I've had two
Samsung 500Gb drives and two Samsung 19" LCD's fail - all in warranty.

I've had mostly WD and Seagate, probably about 8 of each over the past
decade. The only one I've had fail was a WD external SATA that ran
24/7 connected to a DVR. WD replaced it under warranty. I have two
Seagate Freeagent Pro 1 TB drives also running 24/7 with DVRs for 1
and 2 years respectively, and so far no problems. Internal 500 GB
Seagates have been problem-free, as have WD PATA drives of various
sizes.

These days I would be confident buying any major brand drive. I
recently bought a 1 TB Hitachi and a bit later a 1 TB Seagate...
because each was on sale at the time I needed the drive. The Hitachi
is in my computer and the Seagate installed "inside" the DVR.
