Default Combo drives/rewriters?

As I said in another thread, I'm looking to buy an external drive that
will write/rewrite CDs and DVDs.

I notice on some retailers' websites that sometimes these kits are
described as combo drives, sometimes as just dvd writers/rewriters, but
they all do the same thing. What precisely is the difference between a
combo drive and a dvd rewriter? Or have I missed something? I want to
burn CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW.

And does anyone know anything about this bit of kit: Sony DRX-820UL
16x16x6 DL RAM Ext?

I'm not keep on buying a Sony, since the D56A in my Dell has never
worked properly, but the alternative here in the UK is Lacie, Freecom,
etc, and and I don't know the names.

TIA

Hi,

A "combo drive" reads DVDs and can write CD's.

You need a DVD writer. DVD writers also burn CD's.

The advantage of having a dedicated CD-writer is that they often read,
burn, rip, and verify CD's much faster than DVD writers or combo drives.
For normal use, a good DVD burner is all you need.

Brands I recommend include Plextor (best for ripping), LG, Lite-on, and
Samsung.

I can't recommend a particular drive as I don't own a dvd burner but
the difference between a combo and a dvd writer/rewriter is that a
combo should not write to dvd. It will be a dvd player with a cd
burner, so will only write to cd-r etc. A dvd burner will write to
both dvd and cd. If you choose carefully you could get a drive capable
of writing to just about every combination of discs without breaking
the bank. I think normally folks recommend Pioneer or NEC for DVD
burners but I don't know how available they are for external use.
