FAT32 disk cluster size and Norton Ghost
I don't believe Ghost (Norton Ghost 2001) gave me a cluster size
option when restoring a disk image file to a new larger hard drive. But since I will be repeating the exact same scenario on Monday, I will play much closer attention. But I doubt that it does. It created the disk image file from a disk (30GB) with a single partition formatted at 16KB cluster. Ghost restored the image to a new drive (40GB) at 16KB cluster. To be honest, I'm ok with that as long as there's no unhappy surprises coming up. I guess I wouldn't detect any performance differences yet since the previous drive was at 16KB (30GB) and the amount of data hasn't increased significantly. The increased size of the FAT apparently hasn't degraded performance either (what's a few megabytes among friends, anyhow?) Besides, isn't a 16KB cluster on a 40GB hard drive within the FAT32 tolerances? Well, WINXP SP1 H.E. doesn't seem to mind at all. (I know I should consider converting to NTFS, but there are reasons why I'm not quite ready to do so, please!) |
