Default Presario 5716 with 1GHz Slot1 CPU?

Can I put my 1 GHz-100MHz Slot1 CPU in a Presario 5716, which is now
equipped with a 450MHz-100MHz Slot1 CPU?

SiSoft Sandra says the mobo is a VIA Apollo Pro.
It seems, however, that this is no "official" VIA board. The North
bridge(VT82C691) is the same as for Apollo Pro, but the South Bridge is a
type(VT82C686A) listed for the newer Apollo Pro 133A, Apollo PLE133 and
ProSavage PM133.
The form is proprietary for Compaq.

HP has discontinued information about the older Presarios. :-(

The CPU has been running happily for a few years now on my Presario 5686,
which is quite similar to the 5716 except from the mobo(Intel 440BX-ZX).
Compaq claimed the limit for the CPU on the 5686 was 550MHz. But that mobo
was particularly robust, and might in that respect be superior to the VIA
mobo?

since I just won one of these on ebay, I thought I'd do a little
research. What I found, (which should not be taken as Gospel) was
that the mobo should take katmai chips ups to 600mhz and coppermine
chips up to 800mhz. I don't really know the difference in these chips
but on the site I looked at, the katmai chips had a cache of 512k and
the coppermine had a cache of 256k.
That's reallyall I have hope it helps. Will

hi, one thing I forgot in all cases, the FSB needs to be
100mhz not 133. But you did bring up a point about the mobo possibly
being 133. It may be a good idea to try to determine the mobo
manufacturer and model number.
