Default Dell Inspiron 8100 - more than 512 MB RAM possible?

I have an old Inspiron 8100, which I like very much, mainly because of
the display (1600x1200).
It is running the A15 version of BIOS, which I believe is the newest.
The machine has two SODIMM sockets, but it appears that 512MB RAM is the
maximum this machine will work with.
I have tried several combinations: 256MB + 512MB, 512MB + 512MB but they
don't work.
Does anybody know if it is possible to get this machine working with
more than 512MB RAM?

The Inspiron 8100 motherboard has a variant of the Intel 815 chipset, which
limits the maximum memory to a pair of 256MB PC133 SoDIMMs... Ben Myers
