Default ot possibly

Hi I have a digital camera and was looking for a method of storing my
pictures when I am on holiday. Are there any cheap laptops or something else
I could use to store my pictures. I am a bit paranoid about losing my camera
and pictures as I had a camera stolen while on holiday once. Luckily? I had
just changed the film so I did not lose any pictures but with my digital
camera I have a 256 memory card and it can store a lot of pictures.
Thanks Tricia

It may well be cheaper just to buy a handfull of 256 meg cards than a
laptop. I get about 60 pictures to a 256 (IIRC poss 128meg) meg card
on a 4 megapixel camera at 4 mp resolution with little compression.
For about 15 quid on ebay you can get 256meg MMC cards. If you are
using MMC then 6 or so of these will cost around a hundred quid give
you 360 pictures even if you are not dumping any bad ones. That is of
course assuming you only have a 4mp camera. If you are going to 8 to
10mp then you can easily divide the number of pictures by 4.

A half decent laptop is going to set you back at least 250 quid 2nd
hand. You then have to lug that about and probably buy a carry case.
On top of that get the laptop nicked or damaged and you have lost all
the previous pictures. On top of that you will have to mess about off
loading the images each time.

In terms of other storage devices, I don't know of any off hand that
can interface directly with a camera or emulate say an mmc/sd card.

The iRiver H300 series of MP3 players will plug directly into most
cameras.

I think there is something like that available (sure i`ve seen something=20
with a miniature hard drive that does it), but the cost was quite steep=20
(around =A3150-=A3200 I think) - you get about 3Gb of space on the drive=20
though IIRC.

I`d second the idea of getting more memory cards - they`re dirt cheap=20
these days, and can be hidden / stashed in different places quite easily.

What type of media does it use, and have you got any imminent timescales=20
you need a solution by ?

Spare card and v cheap card reader. Take pics / visit internet cafe / plug in
card reader / email yourself pics or upload them to personal space on eg
www.photobox.co.uk

Google for the X-Drive it's a box that takes a laptop drive and has a
USB connection plus card reader slots. And can be used as a normal
data transfer device between PCs.

I saw it a few months ago, but it is expensive approx £70 plus you
have to buy the drive.
