As far as I know, Wordpad format has been the same all
along.

I wish!!!

You should read the Wikipedia article about Wordpad. It explains the
formats in good detail. You can still open any Wordpad document, though
not always with Wordpad. There are good reasons for that and easy
workarounds.

That's what I'm hoping to eventually learn about. I've only been trying on and
off for about 4 years though...no big hurry. But I do hope they don't do it
again.

M$ is well known for changing backup/restore file format/program
_every_ time there was a DOS version change.
Better bet on changes - they force users to upgrade and toss
perfectly good and useful software.

It would take you less than 5 minutes to read the article.

Or, you could continue to whine about it for another 4 years.

I can do both. Word Viewer opens them sort of, but it sux and takes a long time
to open what it's able to open. So I'll keep trying to find something worth
using. It's not my fault I couldn't find out what to use in any of these ngs.

Unfortunately, it's not that Write *became* WordPad, it's that Write *got*
*replaced by* WordPad ... and WordPad never did a terribly workmanlike job
when opening Write files (though it did try to, semi-valiantly).
