what hardware do i need to start file and print sharing network

i got a pc with an ethernet card which is connected to a dsl router with
four hubs,
and a laptop with internal ethernet, mac miniport bridge and iee1394 adapter

i can send files to laptop via desktop but not vice versa. it keeps saying i
need permission from admin, obviously im the admin. i have put the settings
of sharing on printer and certain folders. i see the name of the desktop but
permission is denied until i get the settings right

Sounds like you have all the hardware you need. Your software setup seems
to be the problem. What OS are you running on each machine.
