Need help: System Restore malfunction
Got a question that is rather technical, but since Dell hasn't been
able to help me, I thought I'd try here. I have a Dimmension 2400, XP Home SP1 installed. System Restore is enabled; however it is randomly deleting ALL my restore points. I did some checking inside Control Panel, and found some logs that explain why this is happening. Unfortunately, I don't have the technical knowledge to understand what the heck it means. All I know is that the same unexpected error is repeatedly causing this problem. Before I post the logs here, I'd like to mention that I have run system file checker and nothing wrong was found. I also reinstalled system file checker last night using the XP SP1 disc. But again this morning, all restore points were deleted. Okay, here are the two logs: Event Type: Error Event Source: sr Event Category: None Event ID: 1 Date: 2/4/2004 Time: 10:48:22 PM User: N/A Computer: HOMEPC Description: The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000056' while processing the file 'most.trust .. - ads.lnk' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume2'. It has stopped monitoring the volume. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Details Product: Windows Operating System ID: 1 Source: sr Version: 5.2 Symbolic Name: EVMSG_DISABLEDVOLUME Message: The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '%2' while processing the file '%3' on the volume '%4'. It has stopped monitoring the volume. Explanation System Restore encountered an error when backing up a protected file. This error causes System Restore to stop copying files and purge all existing restore points. System Restore will automatically restart after the next restore point is created. User Action System Restore will restart monitoring file changes immediately if you manually create a restore point (if one has not yet been created). To manually create a restore point 1. Click the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. 2. Click Create a restore point, and then follow the instructions. |

run check disk and if that passes then follow the instruction you posted
regarding creating a new restore point (at which time it should begin to do so automatically again). select start, mycomputer, right-click on the drive you want to check and choose properties, tools (tab), error-checking, check now, start.... do this for each local disk (hard drive) that you may have. I was studying the error logs, and it lists something called
harddiskVolume2. But I don't have a hard disk Volume 2 on my computer. Just one hard drive, 80GB. |

In case you didn't already know, "Flea-Bitten Dog" and "History Fan"
are one and the same. I have two computers hooked up to the Internet. "Flea-bitten dog" wrote in message ... I was studying the error logs, and it lists something called harddiskVolume2. But I don't have a hard disk Volume 2 on my computer. Just one hard drive, 80GB. |

A volume is any discrete unit of storage -- a diskette, a partition, a hard
drive, a CD, etc. In your case it likely refers to the second partition on your hard disk. Rocky "Flea-bitten dog" wrote in message ... I was studying the error logs, and it lists something called harddiskVolume2. But I don't have a hard disk Volume 2 on my computer. Just one hard drive, 80GB. |

Are you certain about that? Dell places a hidden FAT32 partition about 32 MB
in size on the hard drive. It contains diagnostic tools. Rocky "HistoryFan" wrote in message ... Well, if there is a 2nd partition on my hard drive, it was created by XP, not me. "Rocket J. Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;302796 Thanks, but Dell already sent me that link. The info I got there enabled me to learn about the error message causing System Restore to malfunction. But not how to fix it. |
