Older hard drives
Does anybody know where I can get a hold of the older 3.5" IDE hard drives
that run at 5400rpm ? I'm looking for a reasonably priced (new) one in the range of 80GB - 120GB. Have tried CCL, Scan, Aria, Tekheads, PCNextday, Komplett, PCWorld, eBay, Maplin, ebuyer (rather not use them due to rep) Thanks |

They may be able to help. HTH B. Thanks but they only list 3 Hitachi drives, all running at 7200rpm. |

Actually I want to stick it into a fanless external USB case. The lower spin speed should hopefully keep them cooler. It should serve as a cheap backup device so it doesn't need to be fast. I'm a bit peeved with backing up onto CD and then finding out 2 - 3 years down the line, you can't read from them anymore. |

It also follows that it will last a very long time if it's not in permanent use. I wouldn't worry whether it's a 5400 or a 7200. My back up policy is to copy important work to a second internal drive (or another PC), and then occasionally use an external USB drive for long term back up. I'm a bit peeved with backing up onto CD and then finding out 2 - 3 years down the line, you can't read from them anymore. I think this is more of a problem with re-writeable CDs; they are more sensitive to the CD reader, best read by the original writer. I can't really se any use for re-writeable CD any more, now that we have large capacity flash. For permanent storage you could also use DVD. |

Yes they are a bit more expensive but not a kings ransom, especially if it genuinely is valuable data. Ad |

The new firmware even spins the drives down when the unit is put into standby. Yup, mine has a 120gb 7200 in it, but many of the old guides still advise 5400 |
