Default External hard drive not recognized (ZDisk)

I did a really stupid thing. When my PC went weird, I bought a new
one and failed to back up my important files. Well, actually, I think
I did.. I just can't find where I put them. I gave the old PC away to
some not for profit group but kep the hard drive in case I might want
to use it in the future.

So here I am, missing my data but with the hard drive that the data
was on to begin with.

So I get this brilliant idea to go out and buy an external storage
enclosure, put the hard drive in it and voilla! I get to see all my
data once again.

I bought a Cintre ZDisk. I put the hard drive in per directions, but
alas and alack my new computer will not recognize the storaged hard
drive.

I get a message saying that a new USB device has been detected, but
when I go to "My Computer" it is nowhere to be seen. When the message
came up, it even had the name of the hard drive in it... Maxtor, but
the numbers afterwards where gobblygook... Like "New USB device has
been detected Maxtor 675858^(*887?":*^#+=

I put in another hard drive and got the same results.

I see all my other drives, but the new storage one is just not around.
I looked at the troubleshoot chapter in the manual, but it didn't
help.

Anybody got any ideas?

Damned Google, always offline when you need it.
