Default Graphics card: is a fan essential?

I recently changed the fan on my graphics card (Riva TNT2 Model 64)
because it was noisy when starting from cold. However it now makes a
loud hum all the time which is annoying. What would happen if I
unplugged the fan? Stop working, blow up the chip, or what?

Try a different fan, maybe 1 from an old Pentium1 cpu.
I used 1 on my viper770,it was silent and allowed some higher overclocking..
I think your chip will get too hot without fan,and will lockup your
system.............
