Default restore CD's kit on anew hard disk (presario 18xl485)

I've been told that some manufacturers were used to "tatooing" their
hard disk or motherboard in order to prevent people from installing the
system on other computers, and I wonder whether it applies to my
presario 18xl485 laptop, the hard disk of which has been changed. I've
just ordered the restore CD's kit which I have not received yet; do you
think I'll be able to use them?

Yes. The QR doesn't look at the hard disk, it checks the computer's BIOS to
make sure it is being installed according to the EULA.

QR........ do you mean quick restore? If so I was not speaking of quick
restore CD's (which need the presence of a restore partition on the hard
disk) but of a complete set of CD's.

You are confusing QuickRestore CDs with the Recovery CD. The Recovery CD
requires the D:System_Sav partition to be intact and not damaged in order to
restore the computer. The Quickrestore CDs do not. If it is not there, the
QR will re-create it.

ok, I understand now, I just hope that Quickrestore CDs can re-create it
on a newly bought hard disk.

You shouldn't have any problem using a bigger drive. The restore
software shouldn't even notice it. It'll just take longer for it to
format it.

What you're talking about is prevalant in add on's like CD burners and
DVD burners. If you move them to another computer, you won't be able
to install the software. Compaq is notorious for this.

The drive shouldn't be a problem. Even if it is, too late now, you
already bought the disks and the hard drive.

Usually, I upgrade the OS with a clean install; then use their disks
just for the drivers. This keeps your system from installing all the
crap they put on it.

Default restore CD's kit on anew hard disk (presario 18xl485)

One month ago I asked:

I've been told that some manufacturers were used to "tatooing" their
hard disk or motherboard in order to prevent people from installing the
system on other computers, and I wonder whether it applies to my
presario 18xl485 laptop, the hard disk of which has been changed. I've

I have just received the cd's and tried to use them but I couldn't:
"erreur quickrestore # 50 : 4 " and now the screen is blank with the
cursor blinking on the upper left corner!!!!!
I think I was right when I said some manufacturers were used to
tatooing" their hard disk or motherboard in order to prevent people from
installing the system on other computers.
Can anybody help me?
