I did the partitiion on the left over GB.Would be nice to have the whole
deal .

If the BIOS doesn't see the HD as greater than 137 GB then any partition you
create in Windows (which can see beyond 128 GiB) will be unstable and have
the potential for data loss.

Don't you love MS,they don't bother to tell you this in there faqs. Stuck
a 500GB WD passport elite on the dell saw the 465 GB. THought it would
make me partition it to.TOT confused. Wonder if i should get a 500gb
internal drive later and see what happens(my luck it would see the whole
drive).
Thanks

Default Old Dimension 8200 BIOS Question

What really matters is what the BIOS sees. Windows uses protected mode
drivers and will likely see the full size of the HD but that doesn't mean
you can use the full size safely.

Try Dan Goodell's dsrfix CD on this page
http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.shtml

Burn the ISO to a CD with ImgBurn and boot from the CD. Run dsrfix. I expect
it will show...

i13/48 user secs: 268435455 (137 GB)

"FYI, Dsrfix reports three particular values near the top: 48-bit user secs,
48-bit max secs, and i13/48 user secs. The first two are calls to the disk
controller, one reporting the user-addressable size and the other the native
maximum size. Comparing those two indicates whether there is a hidden HPA.
The third value asks the BIOS how much it can address. Comparing the first
and third indicates whether or not you've got a BIOS limitation. In
essence, the first line asks the hard disk, "How big are you?" The second
asks, "No, come on, how big are you really?" The third asks the BIOS, "How
much of that do you see?""

Larry, now I am confused. According to that tool you don't have a 137 GB HD
limit.

Would you like to try this?
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/boo...generation.htm

Download BootIt NG. There is a one month trial usage. Unzip the file and
make a boot CD.

double click makedisk.exe, next
dot in I accept the agreement, next
dot in Mouse Support Enabled, next
dot in VESA Video, next
dot in Partition Work (Don't put a dot in Normal), next
don't choose any Default Device Options (if necessary, these can be chosen
in BING), next
leave Registration strings blank, next
select your CD burner drive letter (you can use a CD-RW or a CD-R disc). Or
you can use a floppy.
Finish

Your BING CD boots to the Work with Partitions window. What is in the
central Partitions section?

What is in the central Partitions section??? C an F are only partitions
on HD no dell partition. But i will look at that Bootlt ng.

I think i just may hold off until i have to do a reformat and see what
happens then. Hate to get rid of the dell since i have only had one
failure on it and it was the HD. otherwise it does what i need it to do.
Thanks for all the help.

It's on the BING screen. You can't miss it. BING will confirm whether you
have a HD limit.

A thought. Back when the 8200 came out it had the either 40 or 80gb(can't
remember)that was the limit the MS comes out with. then comes SP1 that
corrects the limit size. Now when you install XP without sp1 does that
not do an automatic lock on the HD size even if you install sp1 because
you already install the pre sp1 xp version?. Probably wrong on this, like
i said just a thought.
Thanks
