Loud squeaking sound when reading CD-Rs?
I have a CD-R drive and it makes high pitched noises while it tries to
read from CD-Rs and CD-RWs that it has written to. What causes this? The drive has never been able to read CD-Rs that it has written to no matter what brand and color of media I use. However, it can read commercial pressed CDs just fine with no noises whatsoever. Same when it comes to burning CD-Rs. Is this intermittent squeaking noise normal when a CD-ROM drive is having trouble reading CD-R media? What causes it? Please help. TIA, --Randall |

TIA, --Randall s the drive just seeking and that's the racket you can hear? It's kind of searching frantically for the data? Do you always burn at the same speed and do you try burning at a low speed? TBH new drives are so cheap now I'd cut and run and get myself a new one. -- Paul (Need a lift she said much obliged) ------------------------------------------------------- Stop and Look http://www.geocities.com/dreamst8me/ |

TIA, --Randall I doubt that you're surprised to know that your drive is dying if not effectively dead. Among other problems, whatever you write - even if it is readable in that drive - may be so badly written that it will not want to read in good drives or may fail in a short time. It isn't worth struggling to salvage any faulty CD writer even if it is nearly in good shape. Your description says yours is far from good shape. Mike -- http://www.mrichter.com/ |
