one disk of RAID1 array is pulled out: is the remaning diskautomatically the master disk(status optimal)?

Hello,

system with 2 disks(RAID 1) attached on an Adaptec OnBoard RAID1
controller. Both disk are in status optimal=none of the disks are
degraded. Now, one running disk is removed /pulled out..



Question:
Becomes the remaning disk automatically the master disk(status
optimal)?

What is this ''master disk'' you are talking about? There
is no such concept in RAID....

You can try it and see what happens. It is RADI1 after all and if it
does not deal smoothly with a removed disk, better find out under
controlled circumstances. Better make a backup first though,
Adaptec has some pretty bad products out there...

Disks in RAID aren't degraded. Arrays are. If you yank one of the drives
(either one), the remaining drive will still be optimal (unless it happens to
fail), but the array will be degraded.

There's no master disk in an established RAID1. The only time that a
difference between the two physical drives is relevant is when building or
rebuilding the array.

So if you yank a drive, the array should keep on ticking, and rebuild itself
from the remaining drive when you put the yanked drive back in.
