Default sleep / resume problems - dell inspiron, vista

Hi All,
Got a new Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista Home Premium. Clean Dell
build. I've noticed if you allow it to go into sleep that it doesn't
recover: you have to power it off with a 4-second hold of the power
button. Manually putting it into sleep and hibernate work fine. Dell
bemused by this - anyone seen similar problem? All drivers are latest
ones, Windows Updates all applied - would appreciate it if anyone's
seen this before and has a suggestion for fixing.

no cross posting please. this reply only to a.s.p.d where it was read.

how are you putting it to sleep? just by leaving it idle? by closing the
lid? and how are you waking it back up? by pressing the power button? i
suspect you are pressing the power button in an effort to wake it up when
what you are actually doing it shutting it down.

How far does the pc actually get when resuming from standby? Do fans spin
up?

I had standby issues with a PC based on a ga-p35-ds3p motherboard. First
off it would hang going to standby. I fixed this by removing a 3rd party
firewall. However it would then not resume from standy, just going into a
cycle of reboots. This was fixed by down-grading the bios and Gigabyte
still haven't fixed it 4 revisions and 6 months later.

I think resume from standby problems are more often than not BIOS related.
Though you say you can successfully resume from a forced standby. My
experience was with Win XP, but the same resume issue was evident under
Linux also, until I changed BIOS.

It will be worth searching or posting this on the Dell forums.

There are some FAQs in the power management section for laptops.

Yes , or something similar
An RTM installation that used to work fine hiberrnating was broken by SP1.
I did a clean installation from a new disk that included SP1 and it worked
fine
