Default DVD burner problem

I have a Dell Dimension Gen3 with XP home and equipped with a NEC 3450a dvd
burner and Sonic burning software that came loaded with computer.

Occasionally I get the blue screen with an error code: Stop 0X00000007E
when trying to burn or format a dvd or cdrom disc.

What can I do to prevent this? Is it in the software or is the burner going
bad?

Thanks
