Dimension 8100 noisy fan sorted
Yes the problem is sorted, a bit of a workaround but there's a totally silent pc running downstairs now. I now have a newer Dimension and that is totally silent. The old one was passed onto the wife, she just needs a good workhorse but was worried about the noise. I bought self adhesive felt pads and stuck them anywhere and everywhere, sprayed any moving part with a Rocket/WD40 equivalent, hit it a few times and failed miserably in solving the problem. The noise is the PSU fan and I endured it for a couple years, it didn't bother me that much but then as a Bon Jovi fan, noise doesn't bother me.
So the still noisy pc was carted downstairs and set up. Noise proofing was ordered and fitted and yes it still emitted that horrible noise. So resigned to a noisy pc my wife started cleaning years of nicotine off the various parts. She inadvertently hit the sleep button on the keyboard and when the system woke up, it was totally silent. Sorted! So she boots up, sends it to sleep and then wakes it up for a noise free day. Don't know if anybody else would benefit from this but it just goes to show that there can be a solution just waiting round the corner. I now bow to her inferior knowledge but she solved it not me! |

It was all luck but it works. Both fans are running, I did check. I guess somebody was smiling on me or should I say her. |
