Default ARGOSY - HD363N - Network Storage

getting pretty good results with XBMC compared to prior firmware
updates.
Still can't access folders, but I am able to stream video if placed in
the root folder without crashing my xbox. Nice.

do you think thats a xbmc problem? or drive problem?

I'd very much prefer accessing folders, otherwise my music collection
will be extremely unorganized and i'm anal about that....

thanks

Using the Tritton 6-1013 firmware I still see the problem with SetEOF
not working properly.

This only seems to be an issue for files that get updated in place to
a size less than the original size. An example would be a text file
opened with NotePad, some text deleted, and then closed. Reopening
the file shows text beyond where EOF should be.

Hi guys:
I just got an genuine Tritton unit (NSS001 enclosure without drive)
because Fry's Electronics had them for $50, after rebate. Out of the
box it had 5-0607 firmware in it. I promptly upgraded it to 6-1013.

With 6-1013 and Windows 2000 sp4, with no other updates yet, I can
easily replicate the SetEOF bug reported above.

With 6-1013 and Windows 98SE, I CANNOT replicate it.

I made a file that consisted of 200 lines of 84 asterisks per line,
with the line number prepended at the begining of the line. It was
18k. I added 10 lines of 84 characters after line 50, using notepad,
saved and exited. I re-opened the file and deleted the 10 lines,
saved, and exited. In W98, on re-opening, there was lines 1-200, as
in the original, with no duplicated or extra lines at the end.

dilettante, am I replicating your issue properly?

One other observation:
5-0607 you could telnet in using the admin ID and password
6-1013 refuses telnet connection

That sounds right.

I suppose the difference seen with NT 5+ vs. 9X could be the actions
NotePad takes in each case. I suspect the newer versions write over
the existing file while older NotePads write a new file (replacing
the original).

This could be an issue for any application that updates a file in
place and then relies upon the EOF setting in any important way.
Some have theorized that the problems (or at least some of them) with
PST file handling could be due to this behavior of the NAS device.

Perhaps SysInternals' FileMon or a similar utility might shed more
light on this.

I also cannot reproduce the SetEOF bug from Linux.
I booted from the Kanotix 2005-3 live Linux CD (based on Debian,
kanotix.com), and configured SAMBA from the Kanotix menu. I was able
to access the NAS drive. I used KWrite to edit my test file and did
not see the SetEOF bug.

Could someone please post specifics about the SAMBA problems that have
been mentioned? I have only done a quick check so far, but I was able
to access the device, and read and write without difficulty.

I was wondering how to check to see if my base station is indeed
forwarding FTP requests to ports 20, 21 to my NAS? I am trying to see
if the problem is with my NAS or with my base station settings.

I have my Argosy NAS connected via ethernet to an airport extreme base
station with . My Mac G4 iBook running OSX 10.3.9 is wireless. The
firmware is flashed with 6-1013.

In the base station I have my private IPs set to 192.168.1.xxx. For
port forwarding, I entered 20-public; 192.168.1.252; 20-private and
21-public; 192.168.1.252; 21-private (I wish the airport base station
could do ranges...)

And in the NAS utility I set it to a static IP of 102.168.1.252.

I can map to the NAS just fine. I can also connect to the FTP of the
NAS through my browser on the local side, although when I enter the
username and password in the dialogue box that appears, it says that
they are wrong. Probably a different problem althogether.

I cannot connect at all from the outside. Using
http://www.canyouseeme.org/, it says that it cannot see ports 20, 21
because the operation timed out. When at work on a windows machine it
says the the "document contains no data."

I've done a lot of searches on this subject that say this is the
proper direction to go in. I am still kinda a noob with networking.

I found the problem.

In order to use the FTP server function of the NAS, you have to give
it a fixed address, which I did. The gateway needs to be set to the
router address, which I got from my base station utility. Trouble is
that the address given to me by the base station is an outside
address, on the public side of the network. After re-reading the
manuals, FAQs on the site, searching forums, etc... I figured out
that the NAS needs the private address of the router which is
192.168.1.1. Once entered, boom it's working perfectly!

This question has plagued me for 2 weeks. I started this ordeal as a
kinda "plug it in and pray it works" kinda guy. OK, maybe not that
bad but I have learned sooo much about networking since then. Thanks
for your help.

PS, this NAS is pretty cool for $70.
