HDD temps
(4) SATA Maxtor 160s. Aida32 via SMART reports 40, 41, 44 and 43.
Two temp probes, each positioned between two drives report 38 and 39. The drives are stacked above one another, perpendicular to the front of the case, w/2 80mm fans blowing air across. Should I look at additional cooling ? I thought about cutting two holes in my plexi and adding 2 more 80mm (sadly, mounted to the outside), because nothing really blows air across the drives (because of the silly case mounts). This is my case: http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/prod...8TW9KKJT312F56 Ideas ? |

Most drives have temp limits in the 50s, don't sweat it.

yeah to my understanding the hotter the hard drive gets the easier data
corruption can happen :-( On Sun, 09 Nov 2003 11:56:48 GMT, "rms" wrote: :Most drives have temp limits in the 50s, don't sweat it. : :rms : ----- Lee. |

does anyone see any problem with having to mount the fans to the OUTSIDE of
the case ? using my antec 80mm's, i can situate the wires to be hidden on the inside. i don't care about looks, even though it shouldn't look too bad, just cooling. after i monitor the temps, i may add 2 more on the opposite side to pull out the hot air. something like this: --- (fans) (case) (4 hdds) (case) (fans) --- i have been searching case mod sites for a glimpse of someone else doing something like this, but no luck yet. thanks. Why not try to get some slim fans as it will look a lot better and you might have room to put them inside the case http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/ZM-OP1.htm |

It may be a bit hard to see, but I have a mod from Lian Li that includes a hard drive rack that holds up to 5 hdds sitting on their sides with two front case fans blowing across them and into the case. http://www.pbase.com/image/23166270 is a picture of the case. The hdd rack is in the bottom right with 6 holes in it. The two filtered case fans blow directly across the hdds in the rack. I have monitored the temps, but see only 3-4 degs lower temps than you have, so I wouldn't worry too much. The mod actually just makes it a bit easier to fit multiple hdds than to actually cool them much. If your hdd temps stay in the 30s C, you are fine. Ed --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
