I went ahead and sent it back..if the new one doesn't work, I will try a
clean install of Windows.

Hi,

My Sony DRU-500A suddenly quit reading DVD's and writing DVD's. It will
still read and write CD's. Sony had me do several uninstalls of software

and
such to no avail. They've given me an RMA# to replace the drive. I am
worried they may replace it with a "reconditioned" model. Bottom line, I

am
thinking about a reformat and then reloading some of my video software

one
at a time to see if that works. Waste of time?

Also, has anyone had problems with the drive, similar to this?

Thanks,
Brian

My Ricoh DVD burner had an eerily similar problem - right from the
start couldnt burn DVDs but will burn CDRs. I called Memorex the
rebadger firm and they just sent me a replacement and its worked
perfectly since then.

I dont think its a waster of time. A lot of really quirky things
happen with CD/dvd burners related to the software so I always do a
reinstall and even try to reisntall the whole OS and start from
scratch if that doesnt work to be sure. The best is to put it in
another system if you can which would rule out any weird hardware
problems with your PC.

My Sony DRU 510 A just stopped reading DVD+RW discs. Could you elaborate

on the solution
that you found, so I can see if it works for me? Thanks. MC

I had a similar problem with DVD-RWs. It turned out that there is a
3rd party utility on the Software DVD that came with the burner.
The utility appears to be needed to read from/write to the DVD-RWs?

Once I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled the utility,
I was able to again access the DVD-RWs.

Hope this helps,
=Dan=

I have the DRU 510 A also and I totally agree all the software that comes
with it is crap!! stick with nero or some other software that you know and
trust, don't waste your time with the bundled software.

I agree the softweare that came with my DRU-500A was crap, but the drive is
excellent. So far I have copied over 400 DVD's. I guess I will stop when
Netflix runs out of DVD's for me to copy.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled every bit of software that came with my
drive. And also Nero. My drive still won't read DVD+RW's. I'm about ready to
do a clean install of Windows and just not install the Sony stuff. Any other
ideas before i have to go through this process? Thanks.

Yes.
You are correct in that the Sony software is junk, and even after
uninstall, conflicts with other video software operation.
Toss the disk and do not look back.
Perhaps with great care, one can remove all traces from the hard drive
*after* "uninstall" as well as using RegEdit for manual scrubbing.
I did not try that, i just fell back to my backup (cloned) hard drive
before the install of the Sony stuff and used Pinnacle.
