Default Quiet case design

Hi all,

I have an XP 2400+ inside a Chieftec
case (http://www.chieftec.com/products/dragon/dx01wd.htm)
with a quiet Zalman PSU.

For the HS/F I use a Zalman Flower (all copper) with a 92mm fan.
The case has one intake fan (with still one fan slot
available on the front) and two outtake fans - all of the three
are exactly the same - some no-name fans.

The idea would be to try to make this
machine quieter (it's rather loud right now with
55C idle / 60C load temps). I'd like to try a 120mm fan
for the CPU heatsink. Has anyone had any experience
with that Zalman and a 120mm fan? (there has been talk
about a 120mm fan being essentially useless from such
a short distance)

Also the three 80mm fans should obviously be replaced. Any
recomendations? (I was looking at the Papst 8412N -
2600 RPM / 34 CFM / 26 dB) Would it make sense
to go with a lower RPM/airflow for intake fans?
Or should I just go for the best noise/CFM ratio?

I'm also thinking of replacing the small fan on the
video card (a Radeon 9600 Pro) with a big passive
cooler (I had this one lying around from my
previous experiments: http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/zm80-hp.htm)
Is it feasable to cool a 9600 Pro passively?

I realise that choosing the right components is
just half the job, that's why I ask if anyone
could give any references to case design
guides/howtos.

Many, many TIA,
-filipp

hi

mod the case to have a 120mm fan for blowing out! (may only fit in the top,
little ugly...) i suggest a other hs. the zm80 will work on the 9600 pro, i
had one on a 9700 pro, and i think in your case the side intake will blow
directly to the zm80 (make it otherwise...)

i got 4 cases modded with 120mm outtake fan only, no other intake or outtake
fans. rear outtake fanholders plugged to insure good air path. my 5:th case
is under way. i use papst 120mm fans and the tree recent hs was artic
cooling copper silent 2 from a local store, not the best but cheap (need
lapping), very silent, 18db

Difficult one, whats the airflow of the ones you have? And is the case cool
enough, or do you want it cooler?

If you're using three.. YS-Tech do some 80mm fans with 27CFM @ 20dB (8125,
but that just specifies the size, there are different spec ones)

Got one on my 9800 Pro and can clock it to 450MHz/360MHz. Providing case
airflow is reasonable, you'll be fine.

Many thanks for the excellent replies!

The case temp is around 35 C which
I think is quite high (the ambient temp should
be around 23 C). This is probably
due to my only intake fan being placed
directly in front of the HD's (two 120 GB 7200RPM drives) to cool them
(so it's actually just sucking in all that hot air from
the drives) So hopefully adding a quiet fan below
that one would help lower the case temps as well.

I think I'll try out the 120 mm Papst for the
CPU hs (the Zalman was the best I could get at that time, and
I don't feel like dishing out another 60 EUR/USD for
anything else since the temps aren't that bad) That would
perhaps also help get some of the heat from the ZM-80
cooled Radeon.

For the outtake I think I'll also just go with some
powerful 80mm Papsts (I could find any YS-Tech resellers. Btw, here's
a list of the choices I have: http://www.coolputer.fi/tuotteet.asp?C=1)

(I also have a 4 - fan controller, so hopefully I can tune them to a
reasonable noise/cfm ratio)

Unfortunately I can't find any specs on the present
case fans. I remember they were Titan - branded, but
I can't even seem to find the manufacturers homepage. ;(

Again, thank you very many.
