What's the best way to fully erase external working USB HDDs?
Hello.
What's the best way to fully erase external working USB HDDs? I don't think old classic DBAN can handle external working USB HDDs? Any others to use in Linux, Mac OS, and Windows to reuse the external USB HDD (not broken/dead yet)? -- Quote of the Week: "Ants never sleep." --Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org / http://antfarm.ma.cx / /\ /\ \ Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail privately. Boot from a Live Linux CD and https://www.marksanborn.net/howto/wi...drive-with-dd/ /dev/hda would have to be replaced with whatever Linux recognizes the drive as. I didn't know dd was good enough to do that like dban. I will try that. -- Quote of the Week: "Ants never sleep." --Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org / http://antfarm.ma.cx / /\ /\ \ Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail privately. You might want to try ddrescue, it will give you a detailed progress indicator. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.) Responding to my own post, it happens that Linux Journal has a neat little article about getting progress info using dd: https://www.linuxjournal.com/content...ess-your-image -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.) Maybe the SSD manufacturer's utility has this feature.

Well some of the "spinning type" have also been known to have built-in secure eraser software in their firmware that can be activated by specific software released by the manufacturer. In theory this is best because it allows any data not directly accessible by the operating system to be deleted as well - though also using "dd if=/dev/urandom" might be the best guarantee. -- __ __ #_ |\| | _# |
