Default cd drive only reads dvd, no cdrom, music cd's or data cd's.

A couple of month ago my Toshiba 5005-S504 laptop started acting up on
burning cd's. I have a DVD/CD-RW drive installed in the box. Since I
was configuring the system a lot then, I wanted to get a fresh
installation going, which I started today.

I run the ghost cd and reinstalled XP Home and all the tools. Hooked
up to the internet and downloaded all the patches from Microsoft.
Later I wanted to load some other programs from a cd, but it wouldn't
take the cd anymore. The drive moves the cd arround a lot, never
really spinning it up high for a long time and after two minutes just
stops moving it at all.
I switched of the XP function, to be able to write on the cd by drag
and dropp in the explorer window, but still the same problem.
Uninstalling the cdrom driver and reinstalling didn't help at all.

The system doesn't see music, normal data cd's or any burned cd's.

Funny enought, if I put in a DVD, no problem. the System is spinning
up real fast and the mocie starts playing no worries. I don't
understand that.

The drive is a Mat****a UJDA710 DVD\CDRW revision 1.5.

Does anybody have an answer for this problem? I can't think of the HW
going bad on me, since this morning I could use the drive to install
the laptop fresh, no problem. It seems that there is a software
problem somewhere, don't you think?

Help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
