What's the maximum size for a hard drive in Presario 5838?

Most Likely 127GB. I do not believe 5800s IDE controller had the necessary
48-bit LBA addressing to go any larger.

XP doesn't solve the underlying weakness of the controller hardware.

Nope. If the controller does not support 48-bit LBA, no OS can overcome
that.
