I haven't had any problems with mine which sits right beside a plastic
chair mat. I get a lot of static but am very carefult to touch the case
power supply when the cover is open before touching anything else.

One problem i had with my old Dell on the carpet was the dirt/dust from
the low mounted air flow pattern around that machine....
