sure, i boot from CD and it's the latest version (v3.4) i just got

i couldn't figure out how it might be possible to boot from an iso
file in your hard.

On my system (Linux Mandriva), the installation routine added
a stanza to /boot/grub:

title memtest-1.70
kernel (hd1,0)/boot/memtest-1.70.bin BOOT_IMAGE=memtest-1.70

And a bootable (iso) version of memtest86 was placed at
/boot/memtest-1.70.bin

The 1.70 is the package version number, not the memtest86
version. See the documentation and especially the README
file that came with the version of memtest86 you use for
further information.

Cheers!
