Default packaging of DIMMs (new componentry)

I notice that some brands of memory come with the DIMM stuck in a black

So is the protection important.

Perhaps to the manufacturer and, to that end, a measure of sufficiency
to the purchaser of their product. Everything that goes into a
computer eventually breaks, only not at the same time. And memory has
some longer duration for usefulness generally accorded, than might be
said, again generally, of expectancy given other discrete components.
At some point it becomes the subjective sense, past when the
manufacturer is gone, its assets sold into conceivably another form of
packing, more or less similar form from acquisitions and mergers and
perception of the brandname. Wholly that all residual perception is
subject to the mechanics of suspended disbelief: A rationale from
what assurances are given, if quality readily is to presuppose, that
beyond any ambiguity for the application of a contractual warranty,
the owner then is to bear as subject to terminable annulment.

Whether with the plastic casing, sold after-market and independently,
worn, degraded, or dysfunctional and interned into the large blue
barrels legally placed on property subject to the Committee of Urban
Reclamation. A sense for trade in stock and value of fundamental
accord.
