Find out what the data transfer speed of the drive, e.g. DMA mode 3. Your motherboard port must be able to run at the speed the drive is designed for.

I have a notebook computer, and had been thinking about an external DVD

of RAM

Any reason why an internal DVD burner wouldn't work in there?
