Your problem would have as easily been solved by uninstalling the IDE
controller and rebooting, which forces XP to re-install - the same as a
firmware update. This is a known bug in XP.


I think I tried that, too...no dice. Reverting the CD-RW and DVD-ROM drive
firmware to the versions in my previous post is what ended up working.
