Thanks for your reply.
I eventually tracked down a copy of the manual for the router and
found that the reason that I couldn't connect via the serial
connection was that I had to hit the enter key six times....I was
stopping after three or four!
I reset the device to the default config and it worked fine. The
default setting was auto mapping. I subsequently changed to indexed
which also was fine.
