Currently we are experiencing alot of problems with tape backup and I
have had some thoughts.

Is it possible to purchase a SAN with a huge amount of disk space (say
1 terrabyte), then partition the SAN storage up and then backup the
data from various servers to specific partition on the SAN.

a terabyte isn't a huge amount of disk space, it's less than one array
holds these days.

you don't need to partition, you can just create directories and copy
your data into those directories.

This would get rid of tapes [...]

it would also get rid of your data the first time you had a fire in the
machine room, unless your SAN is in a different building, in which case
you have a different set of problems to solve.
