Default compaq 700 freeze up solution

I had the same problem with my 710US freezing, although removing the extra
128 MB of RAM didn't help. I traced it to a troublesome Windows Update;
uninstalled that, and the machine was okay for the most part. However, I
later on reloaded XP and patched it all the way to SP2, but have had no
freeze-ups or other performance issues since that.

I was also told that the machine tends to run hot, and there isn't enough
insulating "stuff" around the heat sink and the machine could shut down
then. That series of Presarios have a host of problems, it seems.

Presario 700? If you are running 512 Megs of RAM it is a hardware
issue that you can not rectify.. Remove SP1 and it will be fine. We
had a ton of these do this and thats the reason no SP1 on the
origional recovery disks. Bear in mind this is ONLY if you are
running 256 Megs onboard and an additional 256 in the expansion
slot.

I'm curious, did you ever find out why?
