I realise this might be a long shot, but I've been given an Epson
SX205
all in one printer.

I am using it in Ubuntu and the printer is immediately recognised
, so I
put in a few sheets of plain paper into the paper feed tray, and
select
start on the printer. It then makes a noise and goes into the
printing
mode as the cartridges move from side to side inside the printer
case.

The problem is that although the first sheet of paper is pulled
in for
the printing to begin, it, the paper, doesn't go in any further and
meanwhile the printing is going on to fresh air. After I did or
pressed
the relevant buttons to do a self test, the paper is now pulled
on one
side only and consequently causes a paper jam.
As the printer is a top load feeeder, I can only see so much.
Top loaders are prone to this. I have pulled out paper clips, ball
point
pens
and hairclips. On one occasion I found a short ruler that the
owner had
accused
his dog of hiding!
It can be very hard to see these thing and sometimes removing the
covers is
necessary. You can carefully tip the printer backwards 45 degrres
and give
it a
shake (watch out for ink!) but most likely what is causing the jam
has been
well and truly caught because of the pressure from the paper feed.
The
problem
coule be further into the short transport but probably not.
The only other possible cause is worn rollwers but this does not
sound like
that.
Good luck.

Thanks , but as you say, it was quite hard to see what was happening.

With a torch shining into to where the paper goes, as the printer
started to make some noises, the paper was pushed inwards towards the
feeder or roller, and about an inch or so of the paper went in to the
roller?? Then it just stopped going any further, but the print
carriage
was going from right to left quickly as if it was actually
printing, but
no paper was showing on the inside where the carriage was.
The carriage will do that because the printer has no reason to think
there is
no paper under the head. (That is the way most ink printers work,
lasers are
usually more thorough at paper detection).
I am convinced it is an obstruction, and probably a small one. Are
you able
to
get the cover off?
Tony

I had a go at trying to get it off, but after I took a couple of screws
of at the back, I saw what looked like 2 plastic clips which the top
part clips down to. I'll have another go tomorrow.
Many printers use clips.
Try this link to the service manual

You may see what you need in chapter 4.

Well I have made a start on taking it apart using the pictures in the
guide, and I have come up against a stop.

On page 99, figure 4-8 of the pdf file, it shows the panel unit in
place, but then on page 100, figure 4-11, it shows the panel unit
clearly removed.

Here it says:
4.3.5 Upper Housing/Card Slot Cover
†
Parts/Components need to be removed in advance
Document Cover/ASF Cover/
Scanner Unit/Panel Unit But doesn't say or show how to remove it

I have removed all the screws except the one under the panel unit, so I
can't remove the upper housing.

Have I missed something?

I managed to get the upper housing up far enough to get my fingers in to
where the paper feed is, and then used a stiff piece of paper to feed it
in from the back and see how far it got.

Now then, it gets as far as what look like 6 black plastic rollers about
25mm long , where they are held in place by 3 white plastic stubby
fingers for want of a better description.

I can't get any paper in underneath the said rollers from the opposite
side, so that is where maybe the problem is.

You said earlier that the paper is being pulled in on one side only. That is
normal when there is an obstruction. In general this sort of printer only has
one roller that grabs the paper and sets it into the paper path. I see from the
manual that this printer only has one initial feed roller (a "D" shaped
roller). So that means that an obstruction can skew the paper as it is
presented to the paper path.
It is always possible that there has been a mechanical failure but I seriously
doubt it. Such a failure would not mormally cause paper skew and they are rare
in any event.
Perseverance is my suggestion.

I re assembled the sx205 printer after deciding I wasn't go an further
of disassembling it any further.
I then connected it up, and lo and behold it printed a nice test page
with no pulling to one side or stopping.

You could say I have fixed it!
