all the bulls **** aside you will be wanting to get at least a 9600gt or
better yet a 8800gt in the mid price range.
take a look at XFX for overclocking and not voiding the warranty. the better...

Ok you want cheap no problem but how many monitors do you want to run is the
problem?
ok for 2 get a cheap fx5200 with 128 megs ram now if you want 4 monitors
then get 2 fx 5200's $35 for one $70...

that's a tuff call to make both are not bad and both upgrades are nice
if you just have to do one then go with the 7900 gt ko sc from evga lifetime
warrantee and 90 trade up thing.

How to add a graphics card (for dual monitors)
you should be able to use that new card with the VGA port and the DVI port
just get a DVI to VGA adapter and plug it in.
that's what im doing on 2 different systems well it was 3 but my laptop...

the 7900 GT KO SC I have cost the same as that 7800 AGP card he wants.

I don't think your dealing with a heat problem.
to me it sounds like a powersuply going bad or the video card went tits up.
every time you do anything that uses the video card other than basic stuff...
