What's the best way to fully erase external working USB HDDs?

Maybe the SSD manufacturer's utility has this feature.

Yes!

I always run a full self-test. This can be done from the drive maker's
utility, or a program such as HD Sentinel.

I caught 2 drives this way, which I sent back.

Do those disk wipe utilities make a difference in an SSD?

My Kingston SSD's software has a wipe the disk option.

Seems like if you filled up the capacity of the disk with random stuff

HD Sentinel's SSD health rating is misguided. He uses the life remaining
SMART number. So as soon as the life remaining in the SSD is 99%, it

SSD, being electonic, could fail. I would always use a surge protector.

If you're going to have the systems for both the desktop & laptop on

If you install the trial version of HD Sentinel, if it connects with the
USB drive ok (it can't read all of them), it will tell you the rpm under

On the refurbished drive WD sent me, the SMART data for maximum
temperature over lifetime was 55C.

Looking at my other drive of that same model, it's never been...

No, the smart showed 55C as the maximum temperature during its lifetime.

It was real clean and has gone for the equivalent of 2 years 24/7.
