Intel HD 620 Graphics driver
 
My Dell Inspiron 15 has an Intel HD Graphics 520 driver, per Device
Manager, that was installed at the factory. It's running Windows 10,
version 1803. I keep getting a Microsoft Update notification that it
wants to install "Intel Corporation - Display - 2/28/2018 12:00:00 AM -
23.20.16.4973". A Google search tells me that this is Intel HD 620
Graphics driver. I also see that some have said this install has caused
problems.

Anyone have problems with this driver overwriting their original driver?

My rule thumb with motherboard chipset and other device drivers is that the ones from the vendor's web site are more likely to work than the ones provided by Microsoft. Once you install the cited driver or even a newer on direct from Intel, Windows Update will stop pestering you.

that the ones from the vendor's web site are more likely to work than
the ones provided by Microsoft. Once you install the cited driver or
even a newer on direct from Intel, Windows Update will stop pestering
you.


I went to the Dell driver site for this service tag, and did see the Intel
HD 520 (not 620) Graphics Driver as an update for this machine. It had the
same date as the 620 offered by Microsoft Update, and the same version
number.

_A14.EXE

Dell also lists older versions of the driver it is updating, and there I
saw the driver I currently had installed. I figured I was on the right
track.

I made a System Restore point.

I downloaded and installed, but the install was choppy. During the
install, I got "...operation is unsuccessful..." messages.

My choice was to click Retry, Close, or Next. I clicked Retry, but got the
same message. I clicked it again, same message. I clicked Next, and the
install continued, but didn't finish before presenting me with the same
options. I kept clicking Next, and the install completed. I rebooted, and
it took an inordinate time to get the Dell splash screen, and finally the
desktop. My taskbar took forever to complete. I sort of expected this
after an update and reboot.

I rebooted again to see if reboot time improved. Nope.

Device Manager tells me I do have the new driver installed.

Here are two screens I got during updating:

Windows Update now shows I'm current.

Control PanelPrograms and Features shows the new driver installed.

I'm going to stick with this install for a while, and hope boot time gets
better. I don't see anything different in the Start Up configuration.

Intel routinely uses the same driver install for graphics subsystems that are very similar to one another. This makes sense, because Intel, like AMD and nVidia, is not going to throw away the designs for hardware and software, but rather evolve them. In recent years, I would bet that most of the difference is physical due to smaller and smaller CPU dies.
