Question about new DVD burners

OK, now that you guys have had time to play with the new DVD burners
that you got for christmas; I would like to know if anyone has the LG
GSA -4040B (+- R/RW), or the LITEON LDW-451S (+- R/RW)? Which would be
the better of the two?

Also, what are the popular brands of DVD burners? Do the LiteOn DVD
burners have the same reputation as their CD burners?

I'm trying to do a little research before I buy one.

TIA

For the time being, the LG GSA 4040B should be avoided, depending on
where in the world you live. While it will burn just about any media
without errors, it *does* have trouble burning most media at its rated
speed.

So far, I've tried several brands of media, from expensive brands like
TY, Mitsui, EMTEC (formerly BASF), to cheaper stuff from Princo, and
Ritek (and CMC, badged under the HP brand). All of it 4x media, in
both DVD+R and DVD-R, but the fastest they'd burn is 2x.

Apparently, Europeans are having a bit better luck burning at full
speed than those of us living in North America. Not really sure why.

Don't know much about the LiteON drive.

You can find out more info on both by looking at the forums at
www.cdrinfo.com, in the Dual Format DVD burner forum.

The LG has some serious burn quality and media compatibility issues. The
LiteOn does too, but much less so. The LiteOn 811/851 drives are your best
bet, but the newcomer to watch is the NEC ND-2500A, it appears to be
producing excellent quality burns and 8x DVD-R burning on select media. for
the price, it's probably your best choice.
However, the LiteOn offers book-type setting and an array of nifty tools
that you will not have with any other drive. Also, the 811/851 may well soon
be writing DVD-R at 8x too. I compromise, and have one of each. ;-)

While I cannot compare,as I don't have the LG, I can say that my Lite-On
451S is completely trouble-free and burns 4x + and - media at 4x with no
difficulties. I've used Memorex, Optorite, Accu and Fuji so far (whatever
was on sale). I also like the 40x CDR write capability.

Just curious, do you know if the CD reading/burning function has the
same capabilities as their CD burners?

Don't know beyond using Nero to copy CD's and make data CD's, burn ISO's,

etc.

I just picked up the GSA-LG 4040b Multi DVD drive at Future shop on sale for
129.99 canadian with a rebate of $50.00 bucks this past weekend.

I've had a chance to use it but I should tell you that I've had no problems
with it. I was able to make successful copies of my oringal dvds (which is
allowed) It burned without any problems. The best media with this particular
drive is to use apparently from my research is Maxell and Sony dvds.

Don't use Roxio CD creator 6 with this as I've done alot of reading about
how bad it is regarding burns especially use drag and drop. Stay away from
that. Something about packet writing only using 2.4 gig on the dvd but not
the whole disk which is 4.7 gig. It failed every time I used it.
Use Nero version 5.5 or version 6.0. No problems with it this software and
I'm quite impressed so far.

The one thing thing I should warn you is that some media won't burn in it
because of a (media speed) bug so you should upgrade the firmware from 300
to 302 which is available on the LG website. Apparently it upgrades the
speed burning for DVD -R from 2x to 4x so now I can burn at 4x in most
formats except DVD-RW or DVD RAM which will only burn at 1x-2x.

A good drive for the money and it burns without problems. Just upgrade the
firmware and use Nero 6. If you get the cds with the burner, don't bother
using B's Recorder. It sucks and always fails on a burn.
That's my 2 cents.
