What's around in RAM disks these days? I'm imagining something in a
3.5" or CD-ROM form factor, ATA or SCSI interface, capacity in the
1GB-4GB range, with built in battery power and magnetic backup. The
idea is to just swap it in place of a hard drive in a database server.
Do those things really speed up database traffic? How much do they
cost? The application is to speed up an overloaded web site with
minimal effort (of course a better fix would be rework the software,
but that's not always feasible).

Thanks.

Yes they are still around, but they do not serve the same purpose as solid
state disks. There was a flame war^w^w discussion on the topic of SSDs,
RAM disks and disk cache a few weeks ago on this newsgroup and you might
want to look it up.
