Problem with 5108 IDE Controller
 

I have a Compaq 5108 (5000 series) I am trying to fix for a friend and I
am kind of stumped.

The box as 2 IDE controllers onboard. The primary has only the main HD
(40Gb) and the secondary has a DVD Drive and a CDRW burner.

The problem is that the BIOS sees the DVD Drive and CDRW burner with no
problem. However Windows ME does not see them at all. And if you go
look in the 'Device' section of System of the control panel it displays
that the Primary and Secondary IDE Controllers have a problem.

I tried booting from the 'Recovery CD' and it boots then brings up a
screen to 'call Compaq Support' and nothing else.

Has anyone else had this problem before? I am thinking that the IDE
controller might be bad and I might have to go get a card to place in it.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a controller driver problem to me.. Try to update them in device
manager. You may have to delete/redetect them.

Are the original cables still being used? All drives still jumpered Cable
Select?
If so, and removing/redetecting the controllers doesn't work, it likely is a
bad controller chip.

Work your way through step by step.

1. Remove the DVD and CDRW, keep the HD as master on the primary IDE, and
run WinME again to see if there is a problem.

2. Connect the CDRW as master on the secondary IDE and run WinME again.

3. Connect the DVD as slave to the primary or secondary IDE and run WinME
again.

screen to 'call Compaq Support' and nothing else.

Only use a recover CD if you have nothing else.

What the heck is a ram driver?

The IDE controller drivers would be completely different.

I agree with the earlier suggestion to physically remove the drives and add
them back one at a time. My only comment is they are likely Cable Select,
not Master/Slave, so when you put just one back in, put it on the end
connector. Add the second one on the middle connector.

Could just be one bad drive, but since both IDE controllers have the
problem, I doubt it.

Heh, who knows..?
I don't think the problem is hardware since the original poster stated the
BIOS correctly ID's the drives in question and is apparently able to run
Windows.

If you put a DVD drive in without the RAM drivers it will only function as
as a CD drive.
Also if you prefer to use Windows media player 9 as I do you will need to

Power DVD)

Also note that if you have Direct CD eg.Drag & Drop installed you need to
get rid of it as it causes problems.

Folks take it for what it's worth no one person knows everything and Tom is
my resident troll who contradicts every post I make.
Having dealt with Compaq's a good amount of the time I have helped allot of
you that come here so you can be the judge.
So far from what I have seen the resident troll has only been good in
searching out links on the Compaq support site that can be tricky for a
novice. Although helpful it doesn't always fix the problem. IE: the touchpad
drivers Tom did not know about and I supplied a link to a driver set that
worked for the end user.

Tom I don't care to teach you the difference between RAM & ROM because you
seem to be a troll and there is no reason to teach you because your not the
one having the problem. (well, not a driver problem anyhow)

As I told you go to www.google.com and search "DVD RAM DRIVERS" and search
MATSU****A and MITSUMI while your there.
