what options for printing saddle "stitched" booklets?

I've been printing small booklets on 8.5" x 11" paper, folded in half
and center stapled. These are five to six sheets of paper (including a
cover in a separate color).

Are there printers smaller than, say, a washing machine that I could get
to do this? Currently I'm using a mid-sized Brother laser printer with
a lot of "by hand" steps. (Print from Mac. Separate every four or five
pages, by hand. Add a cover from a separate pile, by hand. Fold, by
hand. Staple, by hand.)

I know "saddle stitch finishers" are available as an add-on to some of
the more massive machines, but are there smaller ones?

Volume is a few hundred booklets a month, not all the same content.

Are all booklets the same (at least in every printing job)?
If yes, I would suggest to go to the local printer/typographer and ask to do
this job for you. Or to the local photocopier.
He/she has the machines to do the job easier, more inexpensive and better
than you. And then, both will be happy.

Elijah-

I understand the process of organizing material into a booklet is called
imposition.

Check out the "Cheap Imposter" App. I think it will make your job
easier. See http://www.cheapimpostor.com/.

They are called "Booklet Makers" or Folder Staplers and they used to
start (20 years ago) at $4000. That's adjustable from tiny to 11"
wide, from tiny to 17" long, and up to 24 sheets. Try goggling
printers parts if you can't find it directly. Smaller models, if
they exist, for fixed bookletting 8.5 by11 only, with fewer sheets are
probably available as they are used by schools and non-profits.

Searching with that phrase ("booklet makers") instead of the "saddle
stitch" phrase I had been using does give different results. I see
for example the Bookletmate:

http://www.generalgraphic.com/bookletmate.htm

At $700, the price is within my budget, but the feature list isn't so
long. It staples and folds. It's not doing the collating (which for me
works out to separating every N pages and adding the cover sheets, which
are printed separately on different paper). So that's not quite enough
to be tempting.

But thanks for pointing that out. It might become tempting if the
workload continues to increase.

but also just getting a service to make them will be tempting, too

Is your question re. how to print a "signature"
with the pages in the right order, or where to
find a small folder/stitcher?

My brother is a binder. His machines fold first
to form the signature which then sits on the
"saddle" for stitching (stapling). Hence the
name "saddle stitching".

I've seen Swingline staplers that had a very
long "throat" such that you could staple the
middle of letter-size signatures and then fold.
