I have a Compaq Armada M700 and I am able to access the Floppy drive through the Printer Port LPT. Can I do this with a different PC
 

Hi hows it going.

I have been trying to figure out a way to access the floppy drive (A
drive) with this little thing I got from Compaq when I bought a compaq
armada m700

basically all I do is plug the Floppy drive into the LPT port on my
laptop when I want to access a floppy disk. I tried doing this with an
ordinary computer system (not the laptop) and it doesnt work. I dont
understand why it doesnt so I am wondering if you guys might have some
insight into what to do.

I have had trouble installing an ordinary floppy drive into the system
using the cabling ie using the floppy drive that would normally come
with a pc but it isnt working so I thought hey lets give it a try and
no it doest work. There must be a way if it can be done with a laptop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

the floppy drive is more than likely controlled by software that you
do not have on the other machines, but is installed on your laptop.

what O/S are you running?

This is an odd aranagement with the laptop, normally a
system cannot boot from a floppy connected to a parallel
port no matter what gadgetry is connected to the parallel
port, because the bios simply isn't going to accomodate
this.

Therefore, it would be expedient to forget about using this
special floppy-parallel adapter on the desktop system.

Instead, double-check the floppy drive on another system if
possible, examine the cabling (including making sure it
isn't plugged in backwards at either end), and check the
bios for any floppy enable/disable settings or that it is
appearing in the potential-boot-devices menu.

You don't mention exactly what happens when you attempt to
use the floppy (traditionally, not with the compaq adapter).
Does the floppy light up and/or stay lit continuously? Does
it try to access it? What else do you observe about it?
