Shortcut problem (southbridge burn)
 

Hi all,

My Southbridge chipset burn for the second time on my P4P800-E Deluxe.

The first the chipset burned only 1 hour after my first boot, so I think
that I've done something wrong or that I've a defect mobo.

But now, the computer work for 3 weeks. During this 3 weeks I don't have any
problems except one (that append two time, see below).

Here's the description of the problem. When I open or close the front door
of my Tsunami case (from thermaltake) the computer reboot and after I've a
warning that say:
- Chasis intrusion detected
- New processor installed
To resolve the problem, I entered in the BIOS, save setting and exit. After
that the computer work well. I repeat that this problem does't append every
time I open or close the door, but only two times in 3 weeks.

But last friday, I open the door and the computer close itself and just 3
seconds after that I smell that something burn inside so I unplug the
computer but it is too late.

So with this new info I think that the problem as something to do with the
case. There's two blue led on the front of the case and the HDD led, power
led, power switch and reset switch on the panel behind the front door.

My question is: Do you have an idea of what can cause that and how can I
check for the source of the problem (without burn a another mobo...)

And the computer close itself? I guess you mean it turned off.

A burning smell is a bad thing.

Sounds like you're looking for an answer in a place you won't find
one.

I can tell you that opening and closing your case should have
nothing to do with your chipset overheating.

I could be wrong, but. As far as I can tell, you're talking about
your southbridge chip overheating.

I don't really understand how that can happen unless maybe it is
supposed to be cooled with a fan. Seems to me that if your room is a
normal temperature, that overheating should not be happening.

.... is everything properly cooled?
.... do you have a good power supply?
.... is your room normal temperature?

Maybe you are buying bad mainboards.

Does your case have a switch for detecting chassis intrusions and is it
connected correctly? Personally, I've only seen them in OEM PCs, never in a
retail case. Either way, it sounds like you have something shorting out.

I would be very interested to learn how a chassis intrusion
switch could cause the southbridge chip to overheat.

I would like to see the original poster's solution sometime.

Hi all,

First, I don't think the problem come from a bad mainboard because this is
the second one with the exact same problem and with this one, the problem
occurs when I open the door (this let me think there's a short circuit
somewhere).

Second, to answer Ed, yes my case is equiped with a switch to detect a
chasis intrusion. It's a thermaltake tsunami.

Third, I really think that the chassis intrusion warning message is not the
problem (neither the switch itself) but the consequence of the problem.

If fact I think that the two warning message is the result of a reset of the
BIOS that append when the short circuit occurs (if it's impossible, say it
to me).

I've bring back the whole computer to the store where I buyed the components
for a check to my installation and they don't found nothing wrong. So they
will return the case and powersupply to the compagny.

They will return the case and powersupply because they don't know if the
problem come for the case (a wire shorting out when I open or close the
door) or from the powersupply (a short circuit that occurs in the
powersupply because the case vibrate when I open or close the door).
