Strange boot up issue - need help please?
 

Hi guys!

I hope some of you might have an idea on the following issue. Any idea will
be greatly appreciated!
I just assembled 4 identical pc's (the first time I assemble my own pc).
I made sure, that every connector is assembled the same way.
But the pc's react differently when the power cable is connected to the PSU.
Let me specify what I experience:

1. I connect all relevant peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor etc.)
2. I plug in the power cord to the PSU.
3. When I switch on the power switch on the back of the case the pc's do the
following:
2 of the pc's stay off, and you have to press the ON button on the front
of the case to boot up the pc's (this is the way I expected it to work).
1 of the pc's turns on and boots up immediatly.
1 of the pc's turns on the power (fans start, harddisk led turns on),
but the "power led" stays off, and the pc doesn't boot up. Then if you press
the ON button on the front of the case the pc boots up.

This strange behaviour is only seen, when the power cord has been plugged
out and in again.
Does anyone have an idea, what might be wrong here, or why the 4 pc's (which
have identical components) react in these 3 different ways???
I have tried to search newsgroups, but couldn't find anyone with the same
problem.
The motherboards are "MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 54g" and the case is an Antec
Sonata with integrated Antec 380W PSU.

Try going into the BIOS & resetting them all to their default settings.
Maybe they have left the factory in different states. Power up settings are
usually configurable.

Check the BIOS power settings.

I tried resetting the BIOS to standard settings and then configured it from
the beginning. Now 3 of the pc's behave correctly (they don't boot up when
the power cable is connected). The last one however still behaves strangely.
Unfortunately it's the one which shows the following behaviour:
The pc turns on the power (fans start, harddisk led turns on), but the
"power led" stays off, and the pc doesn't boot up. Then if you press the ON
button on the front of the case the pc boots up.
I'm worried that it could be a defect in the motherboard or the PSU? When I
assemled that pc, I had to flash the BIOS, because it froze in one of the
BIOS menues. Now it doesn't freeze anymore, but I am still worried that it
could be defective, and that a serious problem could turn up when the
warranty expires?
Does anyone have an idea what else I could try?

A small update concerning my problem with the last pc.
The motherboard comes with a D-Bracket with 4 diagnostic LEDs. When the
power cord is connected, and the power switch on the PSU is turned on, the
system turns on all fans and the HDD led, but nothing else happens. The
diagnostic LEDs show that it is stuck in the "BIOS Sign On" state. Does
anybody know what could be causing this?

A bit obvious really but can't you swap a few parts between pc's to
eliminate the cause of the problem ?
i.e. the psu, motherboard etc. at some stage a "good" pc will behave as the
faulty one and then you know which part is causing you problems.
With 3 others to choose from youre spoilt for choice !

Thanks, I will try to do that (the only reason that I haven't already done
this is because I might mess something up with the "good" pc's). I think the
first thing I will try is to swap the PSU.
Since I assembled the pc's for 3 of my friends and myself, I will see when I
can lay hands on the "strange" one again. Hopefully soon, I really hate to
think that one of the pc's might have a defective part.

have you completed a reset of the cmos/bios on the afflicted machine
since the bios flash?

Contact the motherboard manufacturer support group and tell them what it is
doing and what you have done to where you are present.
