upgrading ASUS p2b-f mobo

Just successfully updated bios to 1013a, and need to know what hdd can I now
upgrade to. Can I just go down to my local Staples and buy a Maxtor 80 gig
ultra ata 100 now and plug it right into my primary eide connector?

A number of factors depend on the operating system that you are using...

Win95/98/98SE have some problems with drives larger than 32gb, unless BIOS
issues are dealt with - 1013 should cover that.

Then other issues crop up for controllers up around 64 and 85(?) gig, I
don't remember for sure, but check out Microsoft's technical resources to
pin this down... Sometimes you have to run "translation software" to allow
the OS to talk to the drive... That software should be offered by the drive
manufacturer.

Good luck!

Why not use 1014 beta 3 in the first place? Been available for over a
year now.

With 1014 beta 3, it should work fine. However, Maxtors aren't my
favorites at the moment, the failure rate apparently is only fair. And
then UDMA33 is a rather severe bottleneck for a modern hard drive; a
UDMA100/133 controller may be worth considering.
