Laptops Direct + Missing Pixels
 
I have just purchased a Sony Vaio A117S widescreen laptop from Laptops
Direct in Huddersfield. They offer something few other companies
appear to provide - a predelivery inspection service. Superb idea -
they checked my Sony for missing pixels and loaded all the latest
Windows security patches. Its not free though - it cost me £49 for
the service but consiering I cant get broadband yet and as I was
concerned about the disappointment of missing pixels, I think this is
a cracking idea and cheap at the price.

One thing with my Sony - has anyone had experience with enabling the
TV Out - I want to play back my home movies through our TV

display?

Since the service is pre-delivery and not pre-sale, how does this affect
missing pixels? I don't expect that they will repair dead pixels will they?
£49 is a lot for loading SP2 that you can get from any computer mag.

Not if the OPs time is so valuable that he felt it worthwhile to pay

guaranteeing that they are sending a 100% pixel-working laptop to save
possibly disappointing a customer.

Guy, you really need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Dead pixel threads (complaints) are second only to folks moaning about
ebuyer enotes on this group.
A vendor who will guarantee 100% pixels is worth something to some people.

It takes approx 15 seconds to check for dead pixels. Installation of SP2
takes about 2 minutes.
If you think a company charging about £1300 per hour, pro rata for this
sevice is a good deal, then you are mad. £5 is probably an acceptable fee in
my book for a dead pixel check. Charging for SP2 installation is thievery.
Its a rip-off plain and simple.

Still and all it is the buyer's choice, no one forced said buyer to pick
this option. If it were not worth the fee to him he would not have paid. You
wouldn't pay but many people would. A retailer is perfectly entitled to
charge what they like for a product, if people buy it that decision is
vindicated.

Question is if you pay the extra for a machine with no dead pixels
what happens to the machines with dead pixels? They don't go back to
the manufacturer so would you really want to buy from a company which
does this _without_ paying out the extra?

Crap - its about paying for a service that devalues their other stock..

After all the ones the find dead pixels on mean that any buyer not
choosing the service has a higher chance of getting a dead pixel or
more.

And if you can get a box from stores to bench, open said box - plug in
Laptop boot system - check for pixels and repack in 15 Secs then
you do work fast..
